Diamond mouth surprise, June 9th
IN WHICH a book made of lichen is opened by the lake that wrote it…Bone is replaced by silver without any cutting… Antler Beard, a young scholar with nine yellow dogs, proffers a powerful prescription…While visiting a quiet village Diamond Mouth Surprise is held in thrall by a circle of tall, opalescent priestesses…A rainstorm, a sunstorm, a train of hemorrhaging beasts…One magician is alone in the plains, running his finger along the lip of a skull bowl, charming a billion times forty locusts with an endless drone…Another magician rides with dancers in the desert, holding ten thousand dreams in a balloon…A scumkin!…A song of paste and sand…The birch trees burst into flames but they do not burn, instead they pick themselves out of the ground, leaving a mile-wide hole in the forest…Invisible animal is pleasured on a ladder…The Machinery returns to Diamond Mouth Surprise, wearing metallic furs…She might have been a singer, instead she is a song of the woods…A mass wedding in the mountains turns feral.

Max Alper is a composer/improviser living in Brooklyn, NY. Originally from Boston, Max creates lush soundscapes and terrifying dystopias using primarily his voice and electronic processors. He currently studies composition, improvisation, and synthesis at the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College, where he has recently premiered his latest inter-media chamber piece for piano, improvised dance, and projected video art. Above all else, Max’s main goal with his music is to have his audience empathize with his sound on a physical level. From North Indian Raga improvisations to S&M themed performance art pieces, Max is a performer to be reckoned with. As he puts it, ‘this is music to sweat to’.
For this months Diamond Mouth Surprise, Max will be performing alongside choreographer, dancer, and improviser Claire Johannes, a long-time collaborator of Max’s since his early days in Boston. Together, Alper and Johannes have bridged the gap between sound and movement through pure improvisation, creating an inter-media performance like no other.
